Difference Between H-beam and I-beam

The main differences between H-beam and I-beam lie in their cross-sectional shape, mechanical properties, application scenarios and production costs.

Cross-sectional shape:

The cross section of H-beam is H-shaped, and the inner surface of its flange is straight without inclination, while the cross section of I-beam is I-shaped, and the inner surface of its flange has an inclination, generally 1:6, which makes the flange thin outside and thick inside.

Mechanical properties:

The cross-sectional area distribution of H-beam is more optimized, the strength-to-weight ratio is more reasonable, and it has better economic section and efficient profile characteristics. Its flange width is large and parallel, which is convenient for connection with bolts and other components. It is usually stronger and can support greater weight. In contrast, I-beams are better at withstanding direct pressure, have less tensile elongation, and are high in height, but can only withstand unilateral forces.

Application scenarios:

Due to its excellent mechanical properties, H-beams are mainly used in sandwich bridges, platforms and other residential buildings, while I-beams are mostly used in steel bridges, rails, cranes and elevator support frames. In terms of structural support, H-beams are used more than I-beams.

Production cost:

Due to the relatively complex production process of H-beams, multiple processes are required for pressing and forming, and the manufacturing cost is relatively high. The production process of I-beams is mainly rolling, and the cost is relatively low.

In summary, H-beams are superior to I-beams in many aspects, especially in application scenarios that require higher strength and stability. However, I-beams still have a certain market and application space due to their lower production cost and adaptability to certain specific application scenarios.
